The Making of a Sun Dial
The Concept, Forging, Presentation, Purchasing and Selling
I first met Mark Asprey and Adrian Legge when they came into the shop after the Willow Creek Hammer-In, September 28-30, 2001. They stopped by Monday, and we spent the afternoon talking in the shop, and then had dinner in Ferndale. They camped at the fairgrounds that night, before making their way down to Fort Bragg and Mendocino, towards Fritz Hagist's Ranch in Cazadero, California for Oktoberfest.
Mark is from Wales, but lives and works in Southern California. Adrian teaches blacksmithing at Herefordshire College in England. These two men created this amazing sundial at Oktoberfest, October 5-7, 2001.
They drew concept drawings, tossed around some ideas, and then started hammering. They worked on this piece the entire weekend, from early in the day, til the wee hours of the morning. It was up for auction at the end of the weekend.
The piece is made from bronze and iron. The rock was found at the beach near Fritz's ranch.
Dimensions: approx. 45" tall, 15" across dial, the rock base is 16" X 20".
Price: $1450
