Brent Bailey was born in Willows, California. He attended Chico State for a degree in Political Science, with ambition to become a diplomat. He was introduced to welding at his father’s ranch in 1996, but it was a couple of years before his interest in metalworking led to blacksmithing. In addition to some mentors and intensive classes, Bailey was largely self-taught, buying books on blacksmithing to guide his exploration of the craft.
Now a master blacksmith himself, Bailey enjoys spending his time passing along what he has learned to others, as he travels around the world demonstrating. He largely credits his good luck with traveling to blacksmiths being “decent people” as a group. Trusting in them so far, even those he’s only met through phone or email, has led to rewarding experiences.
The past few years, Bailey has focused his work on tool making and developed a reputation as a “tool guy,” but he also enjoys the freedom of creating more sculptural one of a kind pieces. While his work continues to evolve over time, the traveling and demonstrating will remain. The learning and inspiration that Bailey takes away from his demonstrating sometimes feels to him to outweigh what he is able to give to others. Through his use of blacksmithing as an international language, Bailey has ended up being something of a diplomat after all. |
