Steve Bronstein

Modern sculptural and practical designs in copper and iron.

The fine crafts of Steven C. Bronstein are the products of a self-taught Vermont blacksmith. Steven’s work has evolved through several stages of design, from traditional colonial ironwork to his present modern sculptural pieces.


After earning a degree in biology in New York state in the late 1970’s, Steven moved to northern Vermont where he began to develop his artistic abilities. There he created both works of beauty and utility in the colonial ironwork tradition. Along with the changing styles of the decade and Steven’s desire to create a fresh body of work, he introduced Timely Sculpture in the spring of 1985. Decidely modern in design, these timepieces offer both sculptural artistry and practical utility. The designs range from the simple to the intricate.
This new look has continued in Steven’s subsequent work. His designs strive to blend the primitive charm of colonial ironwork with the energy and interest of more contemporary design. Clocks, garden sculpture, Judaica, vases, bookends, lamps, and fountains are just a few of the objects that Steven has sought to blend the functional with the sculptural. Relying on the qualities that make iron such a beautiful material, Steven’s pieces are both delicate and rugged.


Blacksmiths have a three thousand year tradition that has changed and grown with the ages. This capacity to adapt and evolve with the changing designs of the day is the blacksmith’s greatest strength, and just as the hot metal twists and bends to create beauty, so does the craft itself. Steven celebrates this aspect of his art and looks forward to all of its possibitlies.
